Logan County, Arkansas
Mount Magazine reaches 2,753 feet in elevation, which might not seem like much to someone who is used to the lofty peaks of the Rockies, but it is the highest point in the state of Arkansas. Named by French explorers who witnessed a landslide on the mountain and described the sound as similar to a gunpowder magazine exploding, Mount Magazine doesn’t look like a classic peak. It is a flat-topped mesa, and it is surrounded by steep cliffs. The highest summit atop Mount Magazine is called Signal Hill. The views from the top of Signal Hill are breathtaking, permitting a wide vista across the rest of the low-lying ground. The hike to the top of Signal Hill is not a difficult hike; just 1.5 miles at moderate intensity.
