By turns mountainous and arid, urban and spacious, Arizona has some of the most breathtaking sights in the world. The Southwestern state has nearly 7 million people, but nearly two thirds of them live in the metropolitan area of its capital, Phoenix. That leaves a lot of space for some amazing and pristine natural wonders.

Hoover Dam gets all the press, but Glen Canyon Dam is almost exactly as large. Opened 30 years after its cousin upstream, Glen Canyon Dam stands 710 feet high and 1560 feet long. The dam creates Lake Powell, a reservoir of over 250 square miles. You might recognize the dam from Superman III (1983), Planet of the Apes (1968 or 2000) or Hulk (2003).
